Authorities of Chechnya report difficulties with return of a girl from orphanage in Iraq

The special commission has found in a Baghdad orphanage a small Chechen girl, whose parents presumably died. Today, an official from the administration for the Chechen leader and government has reported that it will be possible to return the child to Chechnya if her relatives are identified.

The girl is three or four years old, and she was found in a Baghdad orphanage by members of the special working group to deal with return of militants' widows and children from Iraq and Syria. This has been told today to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent by an official from the administration for the Chechen leader and government.

"The parents of the child were killed. She has been staying at the orphanage for about six months. According to the laws of Iraq, if no family member of a child is found within six months, any citizen of the country can adopt the child. At present, every effort is being made to identify the girl's relatives. To date, there are already three applications from families who believe this is their child," the official reported.

According to the official of the Chechen authorities, DNA analysis will be done in order to identify the real relatives of the girl. "Then the question of her return to her homeland will be solved," the official added.
