In Baku, political analysts explain Pashinyan's statement on Karabakh conflict by euphoria

The idea to achieve international recognition of the right of Nagorno-Karabakh to self-determination voiced by Nikol Pashinyan, new Prime Minister of Armenia, is unlikely to come true, and over time, Nikol Pashinyan will be forced to soften his rhetoric, believe experts interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot".

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 8, opposition leader Nikol Pashinyan became the actual leader of Armenia.

When he became the Prime Minister of Armenia, he said that "stereotypes are not important, while international recognition of the right of the Karabakh people to self-determination is important." The Karabakh conflict should be settled peacefully, but Azerbaijan should recognize the right of the people of Nagorno-Karabakh to self-determination, Nikol Pashinyan explained.

Political analyst Khikmet Gadjizade, the head of the Far Centre for Political and Economic Research, treats the Nikol Pashinyan's post-election rhetoric on the Karabakh conflict settlement as "populist."

"Being on a wave of joy from the success of the revolution and populism, Nikol Pashinyan can say anything he wants. However, the euphoria will fade away quickly, heavy days will begin, and then he will find himself in the difficult political labyrinth. He still has to clarify relations with Russia," the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told by Khikmet Gadjizade.

Over time, under the pressure of circumstances, Nikol Pashinyan will return to the position of the previous Armenian leaders, who "refrained from unilateral recognition of "the independence" of Nagorno-Karabakh, fearing for the international diplomatic consequences of such a step," Khikmet Gadjizade believes.

It is necessary to wait for specific steps to be done by the new leaders of Armenia, notes Togrul Juvarly, a member of the Azerbaijan National Public Committee for European Integration.

"The today's statements voiced by Nikol Pashinyan, of course, can be attributed to the current situation. Meanwhile, if Armenia really tightens its position in the negotiations, the peace process can be completely frustrated," the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told by Togrul Juvarly.

In that case, the expert believes, Azerbaijan will not consider itself bound by any obligations and the conflict can be aggravated.
