Activists demand resignation of Georgia's MoJ head
Teya Tsulukiani, the Minister of Justice of Georgia, cannot elect a new chief prosecutor, as she failed to cope with reforming the justice system, activists of ten non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have stated. The Georgian Prime Minister has rejected the demand to dismiss the head of the Ministry of Justice (MoJ).
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 31, Irakli Shotadze, the Georgia's Chief Public Prosecutor, resigned against the backdrop of protest actions, in which protesters expressed their outrage at the unfair, in their opinion, court judgement in the murder case of two schoolboys in Tbilisi, and demanded first resignations within the justice system, and then – of the entire government.
The above leading Georgia's NGOs have refused to participate in nominating the new country's chief prosecutor under the charge of Teya Tsulukiani, and demanded her resignation and appointment of a new minister.
"We hereby appeal to the Georgia's Govt and demand to dismiss Teya Tsulukiani from the post of the head of the MoJ, as she has failed for several years with her major mission – to reform the justice system," Ekaterina Gigauri, the head of the NGO "International Transparency-Georgia", said at a press conference.
Giorgi Kvirikashvili, the Georgian Premier, has commented on the rights defenders' appeal, calling their demands "completely absurd and having no reasonable grounds," the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.
