Georgian MPs dispute on inquiry into schoolboys' murder

The "United National Movement" (UNM) Party refused to join the parliamentary investigating commission set up to study the murder case of two schoolboys, treating it as the authorities' diversionary manoeuvre. The ruling party has reproached the UNM for inconsistency.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that starting from May 31, Tbilisi hosts the protest action "Do not Kill!" held in front of the Georgian parliament building. Protestors explain their action by the unfair court's decision in the case on the murder of two schoolchildren. Some of the protesters demand the resignation of the government, while others rejected political demands.

Today, the Georgian Parliament has approved, at its extraordinary session, the above interim commission to investigate the murder case, consisting of 17 MPs, most of whom represent the opposition.

The UNM MPs were the only ones who refused to work in the commission. They have stated that the creation thereof is aimed at diverting the public attention.

Archil Talakvadze, the leader of the parliamentary majority, consisting of the members and supporters of the ruling "Georgian Dream-Democratic Movement" Party, has reminded that it was the UNM that "categorically demanded to set up an interim investigating commission."

"They (UNM) thought that we would not support this demand; and when they saw that we basically supported the creation of the commission, and we are represented there less than the opposition, in half an hour they radically reversed their decision," Mr Talakvadze said, addressing the UNM MPs.

After the UNM's refusal, its quota in the commission was used by another opposition party, the "European Georgia". According to the Parliament's regulations, the commission will work for three months; if necessary, its work can be extended.
