Sources report resignation of Yerevan Mayor

Today, at a meeting with officials from the Yerevan City Mayoralty, Taron Margaryan has announced his resignation, sources report.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 16, activists broke into the Yerevan Mayoralty with a demand for the resignation of Taron Margaryan and the dissolution of the Council of Elders. An action of Taron Margaryan's supporters was also held in front of the Mayoralty. The Mayor assured he did not intend to resign. On June 25, several dozen people blocked the entrance to the building of the Yerevan City Mayoralty with the demand for the Mayor's resignation.

Today, Taron Margaryan has held a meeting with officials from the City Mayoralty, during which he announced his resignation, the "NEWS.am" reports with reference to sources from the Yerevan City Mayoralty.

Meanwhile, Taron Margaryan has refused to explain why he made such a decision, the "ArmInfo" quotes an official from the City Mayoralty as saying.

Kamo Areyan, the first deputy of the Yerevan Mayor, will temporarily perform the duties of the city head, the "Sputnik-Armenia" reports.
