NATO Secretary General reminds Putin of Georgia's independence

Russia has no right to influence the Georgia's decision to become a member of the NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, the NATO's Secretary General, said on July 18 in response to the Russian president's promise of a tough reaction. The decision to join NATO is no threat to any other country, Mamuka Bakhtadze, the Georgia's Prime Minister, has assured.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on July 17, Vladimir Putin announced a "response" to Georgia's accession to NATO, since the NATO's advance to Russia's borders, in his opinion, would pose a threat to his country.

Russia has no right to decide on Georgia's accession to NATO, Mr Stoltenberg said on July 18. "Russia has no right to decide for its neighbours, to make decisions about what they have to do; Georgia is a sovereign and independent country, and it has the right to determine its own way," the RIA "Novosti" quotes him as saying.

On July 18, Mamuka Bakhtadze, the Prime Minister, said, commenting on Russian president's words, that the Georgia's possible accession to NATO is not directed against any other country, the "Georgia Online" reports, adding, with reference to Mr Bakhtadze, that the final decision on Georgia's accession to NATO would be achieved "by consensus."
