Armenians mourn loss of Charles Aznavour

Today, Charles Aznavour, a world-famous French chanson singer of Armenian origin, has died in the 95th year of his life. In social networks, Armenian residents and migrants from the country write about the irreparable loss.

Charles Aznavour died in his house in the south of France, the "Agence France-Presse" reported.

The CNN and the Time recognized Charles Aznavour as the best pop performer of the 20th century. During his 70-year career, he sold 100 million CDs, wrote 1200 songs, played 80 roles in the cinema, released 294 albums, and performed more than 1000 concerts in almost 100 countries throughout the world, the RIA "Novosti" reports.

In the centre of Yerevan, thousands of Armenian citizens lit candles in Charles Aznavour Square to pay tribute to the memory of the world-famous chanson singer. The memory action is also being held in the city of Gyumri, the "Interfax" reports.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has called Charles Aznavour a national hero of Armenia and one of the greatest sons of the Armenian people.

In 1975, to mark the 60th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, Charles Aznavour and his co-author Georges Garvarentz wrote the song "Ils sont tombés" (They fell). Charles Aznavour spoke in support of the French law on the criminalization of the denial of the Armenian Genocide.

Social networks users of Armenian origin mourn over the death of Charles Aznavour.

"For my people, Aznavour is the personification of kindness, love, devotion, and selflessness ... Today, Armenians around the world have become orphans," Roman Nadiryan wrote in Facebook.
