Wife of IBA's former head arrested in London

Zamira Gadjieva, the wife of Djakhangir Gadjiev, the former head of the International Bank of Azerbaijan (IBA), has been placed in a detention facility in London. She is charged with money embezzlement.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Zamira, the wife of Djakhangir Gadjiev, a former board chairman of the IBA, was put on the wanted list and arrested in absentia. In October, British investigators got interested in her spending at a department store and on expensive real estate. The assets of Zamira Gadjieva are frozen.

The London Magistrate Court has arrested Zamira Gadjieva, the "Interfax" reported on November 6.

Ms Gadjieva is charged with money embezzlement; her extradition to Azerbaijan is being considered.

She was detained last week at the request of Azerbaijan; her jewelleries worth over 400,000 pounds sterling were confiscated, the RBC reports.

The "Caucasian Knot" has also reported that Djakhangir Gadjiev was sentenced in October 2016 to 15 years in prison on charges of embezzling more than 211 million manats (over 124 million US dollars) from the IBA. This October, he saw a new charge.
