Backstage process of reconciling borders with Chechnya provokes Dagestanis' concern
Experts, NGOs, and independent media should be involved in the coordination of borders between Dagestan and Chechnya, believe authors of the appeal to the authorities of the Russian Federation. The authorities should take into account the negative experience of work in Ingushetia, note Dagestani journalists.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that activists from Dagestan appealed to Dagestani leader Vladimir Vasiliev and President Vladimir Putin with a request to secure a transparent process of the border demarcation with Chechnya.
Dagestani officials failed to study historical materials before clarifying the border with Chechnya and created an information vacuum around the border demarcation process, thus provoking tension in a number of areas of the republic, participants of a roundtable stated.
The authors of the appeal have noted that independent media and public activists "are not allowed to attend meetings of the commission on borders" and there is also pressure on officials to force them not to comment on the situation.
According to Magomed Magomedov, the deputy editor-in-chief of the newspaper "Chernovik" (Draft), Dagestan fears a repetition of the Ingush scenario and the loss of disputed territories.
Addressing the President on each significant issue has become an established form, since people hope to find the truth in the Kremlin, says Shakhrudin Khalidov, an observer of the newspaper "Novoye Delo" (New Case).
Meanwhile, he has noted that the situation in Dagestan differs from that in Ingushetia, since here the border with Chechnya has long been established and many members of the commission on borders do not see any need to clarify the borders between Dagestan and Chechnya.
