Dagestani activists apply for seven actions in support of Abdulmumin Gadjiev
The initiative group in support of the arrested journalist Abdulmumin Gadjiev has submitted applications for five rallies and two demonstrations. The actions have been applied for in different places and at different times, so it will be more difficult for officials to justify the refusal, supporters of Gadjiev have stated.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Dagestan authorities had twice refused to sanction rallies in support of Gadjiev.
On June 18, an editor of the Dagestani weekly "Chernovik" (Draft), Abdulmumin Gadjiev, was arrested within a case of financing terrorism. In total, 11 people figure in the case; Gadjiev insists on his innocence. His detention has triggered public resonance. Picketers in support of Gadjiev treat the case as fabricated, since one of the suspects, Kemal Tambiev, has confessed to slandering Gadjiev under pressure.
"It's quite abnormal that the people who want to express support for Abdulmumin Gadjiev are not able to hold a mass event in the manner prescribed by the law," said Idris Yusupov, a journalist and a co-organizer of the above actions.
Earlier, for several days Gadjiev's colleagues and friends have held pickets in Makhachkala demanding to release him. Passers-by, including officials, came up with words of support, the picketers have reported.
