Derbent women-hunger-strikers achieve Ombudsperson's attention

The Dagestani Ombudsperson has announced his readiness to help mothers of two detained residents of Derbent in protecting their rights. His meeting with detainees' relatives is scheduled for July 3.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 24, the mothers of the detained Islam Barzukaev and Gasan Kurbanov announced a hunger strike at the police building in Derbent demanding to release their sons. On July 1, they told about the absence of law enforcers' reaction to their demands.

Islam Barzukaev, Gasan Kurbanov and Mizarali Mizaraliev are suspected of dealing with explosives, weapons and ammunition. Their relatives insist on young men's innocence. The detainees said they had signed confessions under pressure and threats.

Nine days have passed since the start of the action, but there is no reaction from the authorities, Ms Barzukaeva has complained. According to her story, the only ones, who are not indifferent to their action, are passers-by.

Barzukaeva's health condition has deteriorated; she's very exhausted, said Zainab Rabadanova, a Kurbanov's aunt.

The women demand a meeting with the republic's public prosecutor and the Ombudsperson, as well as an independent examination of the torture of Barzukaev and Kurbanov.

The Dagestani Prosecutor's Office has announced their readiness to consider the protesters' application.

Djamal Aliev, the Dagestani Ombudsperson, said that he was monitoring the situation in Derbent. He has added that he is ready to meet the mothers.
