Author of the book about Kanzhal Battle wins trial against Balkar activist

The Supreme Court (SC) of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR) has obliged Khadis Tetuev, an activist, to pay 50,000 roubles to Victor Kotlyarov, the author of the book "Kanzhal Battle: Look Through Centuries". The SC has treated the Tetuev's publication about Kotlyarov's book as insulting.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in November 2018, Victor Kotlyarov, the author of the above book, went to court demanding to protect his honour and dignity with compensation for his moral harm in the amount of 100,000 roubles to be collected from the author of a post in a social network, which negatively referred to his book. A Balkar activist, Khadis Tetuev, insists that he wrote nothing offensive about Kotlyarov.

According to an expert, Tetuev's text contains negative information about Kotlyarov's personality and activities. The general sense of the article is that "Kotlyarov has contributed to creating conflict situation in the KBR," the expert believes.

The SC has found the information contained in the Tetuev's article unreliable and discrediting Victor Kotlyarov's honour and dignity. His for compensation was satisfied, but reduced down to 50,000 roubles.

In his book, Kotlyarov wrote that the Kanzhal Battle was directly related to the modernity – in particular, to September 2018 riots in the village of Kendelen. On October 15, 2018, Kotlyarov complained to the prosecutor's office about threats to his address on the Internet, linking them to the release of the book. According to his version, the authors of the posts accused him of "corruption, falsification of history, incitement of hostility of Balkarians against Kabardians," and offered to impale him.
