North-Ossetian residents support project for victims of domestic violence after murder of woman by her ex-husband

Over the several days of the "Xotae" project for rendering assistance to victims of domestic violence, created after the resonant murder of Regina Gagieva, its organizers noted an increase in addresses from victims and offers of help. Residents of North Ossetia found the project relevant for the republic, but doubted that women were ready to make their problems public.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that 22-year-old Regina Gagieva died on September 25. According to investigators, her former husband, who escaped from house arrest, injured her with a knife out of jealousy.

The death of Regina Gagieva occurred amid the decriminalization of domestic violence, journalists emphasized.

According to Asia Dzagurova, one of the organizers of the "Xotae" project, their main goal is to focus public attention on the problem of domestic violence.

"We want to accumulate the resources of organizations already engaged in solving the problems in this sphere, including social shelters, religious organizations, and psychological assistance centres," said Agunda Bekoeva, one of the organizers of the "Xotae" project.

The project organizers intend to raise the issue of creating a shelter for women who fell victim to domestic violence, notes project coordinator Elina Valieva.

"First of all, psychological support is needed. Furthermore, young women need special trainings: for example, they should be taught how to recognize a psychopath," said Madina Djhussoeva, a resident of Vladikavkaz.
