Law enforcers detain three activists at protest action in Tbilisi

Today, activists and oppositionists have organized a protest action in front of the National Library near the Georgian parliament building. Three oppositionists were detained in the course of clashes between protestors and law enforcers.

On November 28, law enforcers prevented a rally near the entrance to the Georgian parliament building and detained three activists. The Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) threatened to disperse the protesters if they tried to block the roads.

The protests began in Tbilisi on November 14, after Georgian MPs failed to pass a bill to change the electoral system.

Today, at the National Library building, Thea Tsulukiani, Georgian Minister of Justice, is holding an event dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), the "Georgian News" reports. During the Minister's arrival, the protesters were shouting: "Shame."

The protest was accompanied by clashes between the protesters and the police, and several protesters were detained, including Giga Ugulava, Giorgi Kandelaki, and Irakli Abesadze, the leaders of the "European Georgia" Party, the "InterPressNews" reports. According to the edition, Irakli Abesadze got an injury to his face. All three leaders have already been released.

"The police may not detain an activist if he or she does not commit any crime. No violence may be used against citizens, MPs, and journalists," Irakli Abesadze said.

Earlier, Giorgi Gakhariya, the chair of the Georgian government, called the actions of the oppositionists "destructive" and aimed at "blocking the country."
