Reprimanding Chechens for drinking alcohol reveals poor effect of educational talks

On December 14, a message about another educational talk in police with those detained for using alcohol and psychotropic substances was posted in the Instagram public "ChP Chechnya".

The conversation with the detainees was conducted at the Urus-Martan ROVD (District Interior Division), a source from the republic's Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) has confirmed to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent. He has added that after a prophylactic talk, young people were released home under the caution of their relatives.

The Instagram post is illustrated with several photos showing five young people standing along the wall with their heads down. Some commentators have doubted the efficiency of such "educative lectures."

"If they have addiction to these habits, no conversation will help until they themselves realize the harm thereof," the user abdurahmanova_095 has noted.

Regular public demonstrations of detainees have no serious effect, agrees Aslambek, an employee of one of Chechen NGOs. "Exposing people to general shame as an educative measure is no longer efficient. A proof is that, despite regular demonstrations of public repentances organized by law enforcers, violations continue. Apparently, this measure has already exhausted itself," Aslambek told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
