Funeral participants in Chechen village get into coronavirus risk group

The funeral in the village of Malye Atagi of the Shali District, which was attended by many people, threatened them with coronavirus infection, since it was found in family members of the deceased. The Speaker of the Chechen Parliament called on the rite participants to observe self-isolation. However, earlier, officials themselves ignored the self-isolation measures.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on April 5, Chechen authorities imposed a strict quarantine regime due to the coronavirus spread.

In violation of the authorities' ban and clergymen's recommendations, the religious ceremonies at the funeral of Akhmad Garaev, an elderly villager, were held by a large crowd of people.

As of April 9, Chechnya had confirmed 22 coronavirus infection cases; one person died.

Salakh Mezhiev, the Mufti of Chechnya, has criticized on the Instagram the organizers of the mass funeral rite. Most commentators to his video appeal were also outraged by the irresponsibility of the funeral organizers.
