PFPA accuses law enforcers of torturing arrested activist

Law enforcers have tortured Niyameddin Akhmedov, an arrested activist of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), aiming to force him to testify against Ali Kerimli, his party comrade, the PFPA has stated. The country's police did not confirm this version.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Akhmedov, a PFPA activist, was detained on April 15 after he left home after receiving a respective SMS permit in connection with the quarantine regime. The party has linked his detention with his political activities. On April 16, Akhmedov was sentenced to 30 days of administrative arrest for violating the quarantine regime.

In the morning on April 28, Niyameddin Akhmedov was taken from the administrative detention centre to another place where he was tortured, Seimur Khazi, the PFPA deputy chairman told, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

The PFPA has issued a statement condemning the torture of Akhmedov. "Everything that happened to Niyameddin Akhmedov, not only contradicts the Code for Punishment Execution, but it is also a criminal offense; and the responsibility for this crime lies with the political authorities," says the statement.

The press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) has denied that Akhmedov was tortured, and treated it as a fiction.
