In Dagestan, charitable foundations experience increased burden amid pandemic

Residents of Dagestan, who found themselves short of money because of the forced self-isolation, most often ask to help them with food and housing, members of Dagestani charitable foundations report.

The threat of the epidemic revived the tradition of self-organization in the Caucasian society, and people actively help each other to deal with the common problem, scientists and activists note.

The Dagestani charitable foundation "Hope" does not stop its activities, despite the regime of self-isolation, reports Shamil Abashilov, the spokesperson for the charitable foundation.

The charitable foundation "Pure Heart" also experiences an increased burden, says Misedu Sadrudinova, the spokesperson for the charitable foundation. According to the activist, over the past month, more than 9000 families have been provided with food aid packages.

Furthermore, the charitable foundation distributed over 4000 items of protective clothing to doctors.

Using the raised funds, the human rights organization "Patient Monitor" managed to purchase protective gear for ambulance crews in Kizilyurt and Kaspiysk, reported Ziyautdin Uvaisov, the NGO's head.

It should also be added that Dagestan ranks fifth in Russia in terms of the increase in the number of new cases of the coronavirus infection. Today, the number of coronavirus-infected patients in the republic has reached 2267.
