Georgian authorities allocate over USD 93 million to support farmers

On May 20, Georgia is launching state support programmes for agrarian producers, Giorgi Gakhariya, the Prime Minister, stated on May 12. The programme provides payments to the farmers whose businesses have suffered from the coronavirus pandemic, subsidies to buy fuel, as well as exemptions from irrigation fees.

According to the Premier, 42,000 Georgian farmers will be completely exempted from payments for irrigation in 2020.

Also, according to the resolution of the Government of Georgia, the above 42,000 farmers will have their debts to the "Georgian Amelioration" Company completely written off.

Besides, every farmer who needs to buy equipment for his greenhouse or irrigation system will receive direct state financial assistance or 50% of the cost of the works, Mr Gakhariya has added.

The support measures will cover about 200,000 farmers. The total budget to help them will amount to 300 million laris (about 93.8 million US dollars), the Prime Minister has informed.
