Cell tower issues splits Novy Chirkei villagers

The signalmen have installed a cell tower in the village of Novy Chirkei of the Kizilyurt District without coordination with local residents, the villagers who took part in the protest rally have explained. If people lose their cellular communication and Internet access, then, protesters will be the first to demand the restoration of communication, other villagers assert.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 28, Novy Chirkei villagers threatened, at their meeting, to burn the cell tower down. They were concerned that radiation from the tower equipment would be harmful to their health.

The support for the base station was installed early in the morning of May 28, Akhmed, a villager, who took part in the meeting, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

"We are outraged. The tower is near the school; and there is also a kindergarten nearby. Of course, we fear that radiation can affect our children. All of these towers are harmful," he said.

Let us note here that not all the villagers of Novy Chirkei shared the indignation regarding the installed tower.

Magomedrasul, another villager, is perplexed by other villagers' indignation. According to his version, the action against the towers was triggered by rumours spread in messengers and telling about the dangers of such objects. "Everyone uses the mobile Internet and communicates in instant messengers. If you turn off all this, [the protesters] will be the first to go to the rally with the demand to restore the communication," he said.
