Azerbaijan and Armenia exchange accusations of shelling

During the last 24 hours, positions of the Azerbaijani militaries were shelled for 62 times with the use of sniper rifles, including those stationed in the villages on the border with Armenia, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defence (MoD) has stated today. A representative of the Armenian MoD reported 17 shelling attacks for the last day.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the situation on the border of the Tovuz District of Azerbaijan and the Tavush Region of Armenia escalated on July 12. The Azerbaijani side announced the death of 11 of its soldiers and one civilian, and wounding of four soldiers. Given the four killed and 20 wounded people on the Armenian side, the count of victims since the start of the aggravation on the border made 40 killed and wounded people.

According to the Armenian side, the situation on the border aggravated after the Azerbaijani troops had tried to break through the border. In its turn, the Ministry of Defence of Azerbaijan claims that the conflict escalated after the Armenian armed forces had attempted to go on the attack.

"During the last 24 hours, units of the Armenian Armed Forces, by using sniper rifles, violated the ceasefire for 62 times in various sections of the frontline," the Azerbaijani MoD has informed on its website today.

"In some sections of the border, the opponent has violated the ceasefire for 17 times, by firing 183 small arms shots in the direction of Armenian positions," Shushan Stepanyan, the press secretary of the Armenian MoD has written in his Facebook today.
