Baku: three oppositionists detained because of rally

In Baku on July 15, Mamed Ibragim, a member of the Presidium of the oppositional Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), and two party activists, Elnur Yusubov and Sarvan Djumaev, were detained in connection with the action in support of the Azerbaijani Army. The PFPA has claimed 38 detained party members.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that 46 activists were detained after a rally in support of the Azerbaijani Army held in Baku on July 15. 26 of them have been criminally charged, the human rights organization "Defence Line" reports.

"My father was detained when he was bringing food to my brother Mekhti, who is kept in a penitentiary unit for tuberculosis patients," said Turan, Mamed Ibragim's son.

"Basically, our activists are accused of 'destroying someone else's property,' which means parliamentary inventory and police cars, as well as of 'violating the public order' and 'resisting the police,' which is absurd," Seimur Khazi, PFPA Deputy Chairman, has stated.

As reported, in February, Mamed Ibragim was arrested for 10 days after participating in the commemoration action for the victims of the Khojaly tragedy. Prior to that, he had spent more than three years in prison on criminal charges.
