Three residents of Chechnya apologize for video with air pistol

Two young men detained in Chechnya repented for posting on the Internet a video in which they were posing with an air pistol. An older brother of one of the repenting young men promised to prevent a repetition in future of any incident of such kind. Instagram users saw no reason for a public apology in the video.

Some local residents expressed their surprise about the video with apologies posted on a page in Instagram. "Anyone may buy an air pistol in a store. So why did they force guys and even their relatives to apologize?" noted Adlan, an employee of a local NGO.

"Well, a guy played with a pistol, almost a toy pistol. Why should you drag him somewhere and force him to apologize? Earlier, we have never faced such situations when a person and even his family members had to apologize for insignificants acts in front of a video camera," noted Saipuddi, a resident of Grozny.

The practice of public apologies is fuelling latent discontent with the authorities in Chechnya, notes Svetlana Gannushkina, the chair of the "Civic Assistance Committee".
