Court leaves Chechen Djumaev, participant of action in support of Navalny, under arrest

Said-Mukhammad Djumaev, a native of Chechnya, accused of using violence against a state official, will stay in custody until March 23.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on January 23, at a rally in support of Alexei Navalny in Moscow, Djumaev entered into a confrontation with law enforcers.

The investigation of Djumaev's is over; and soon the case materials will be sent to the prosecutor's office for an indictment, the "Interfax" writes with reference to lawyer Murad Musaev, an advocate.

The lawyers earlier interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot" have suggested that the verdict is unlikely to be mild. They did not rule out that Djumaev could avoid real imprisonment if he admits his guilt.

The resonance around Djumaev's story was caused by the fact that he became the first Chechen in many years to take the side of the opposition, said the blogger, Musa Lomaev, and Oyub Titiev, a rights defender.

Adam Delimkhanov, an advisor to Ramzan Kadyrov, offered Djumaev to renounce the opposition, promising that the head of Chechnya would help him to solve problems with the law. After Djumaev had ignored this proposal, Magomed Daudov, Speaker of the Chechen Parliament, called the activist a provocateur and summoned Djumaev's relatives. They took responsibility for the young man's deed. At the same time, many Chechen social media users have admired Djumaev's bravery.
