Georgian farmer arrested within case of labour slavery and worker's death

A Russian citizen was taken into labour slavery and died after severe beatings, the General Prosecutor's Office (GPO) of Georgia has stated. The owner of the farm is in custody.

According to the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), the farmer from the village of Gavaza, Kvareli District, had invited the Russian to work, and upon his arrival, he took away his passport and kept him, forcing to work and live in a cattle stall. The worker was systematically beaten up; on February 10, the farm owner broke his ribs. After that, the man was not provided with any medical help, but, on the contrary, was forced to work. On March 7, the worker was beaten up again and died from his injuries three days later.

The farmer was detained on March 11; he and faces from 15 to 20 years in prison.
