Relatives of POWs try to break into building of Armenian MoD

The police pushed back protesters who tried to break into the building of the Armenian Ministry of Defence (MoD) in Yerevan. Relatives of prisoners of war (POWs) and soldiers missed in action demanded from military heads to go out to meet them.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on April 8, relatives of the Armenian prisoners of war began a protest action at the Erebuni airport after they received information that a plane, which had arrived from Azerbaijan, had not delivered any prisoners of war. The Armenian authorities cannot announce the timeframe for the return of the POWs, says Andranik Kocharyan, the chairman of the commission on defence and security.

The protesters tried to break down the gate in front of a checkpoint near the MoD’s building. They managed to remove the gate off one hinge, but the police pushed them back.

Officials from the Armenian MoD suggested the protesters to discuss the situation with Vagarshak Arutyunyan, Armenian Minister of Defence, and Artak Davtyan, the chief of the General Headquarters of the Armenia’s Army. However, the protestors who gathered in front of the MoD’s building refused and demanded that top-ranking military personnel come out to them.
