Advocates claim torture of residents of Kaspiysk convicted for terrorism

The residents of the city of Kaspiysk, Bagauttin Medjidov, Ismail Narchavov, Felix Pirveliev, Murad Abdulkerimov and Gusein Ramazanov, sentenced to long prison terms on charges of creating a terrorist community and preparing an attack on a policeman, were tortured after detention; grenades and ammunition were planted on them. This was stated by their advocates Nadezhda Borodkina and Magomed Magomedov.

According to the advocates, the young men were detained in the fall of 2016, when they launched an inquiry into two arsons of beer bars in Kaspiysk.

Nadezhda Borodkina has noted that all the five defendants had complained of torture, but only a formal check was conducted on their applications. She treats the accusation of preparing an attempt on a law enforcers as untenable, adding that the three defendants, from whom grenades and ammunition was confiscated, had claimed that these items had been planted on them by law enforcers. Besides, the advocate has noted that the convicts were not zealous Muslims.

Fatima, an Abdulkerimov's sister, is convinced of her brother's innocence.

"He wasn't a member of any terrorist community; and he saw no weapons in his eyes ... They did not kill or rob anyone; they just made a mistake," she has stated.
