Pashinyan asks Putin for military support

Nikol Pashinyan, the acting head of the Armenian Government (Premier), has appealed to Russian President Vladimir Putin asking him to provide assistance, including military one, in resolving the situation in the Syunik Region on the border with Azerbaijan.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 12, Azerbaijani militaries advanced three kilometres deep into the Syunik Region of Armenia and, according to the administration of the city of Goris, tried to gain a foothold in the area of Black Lake. The next day, the Azerbaijani militaries again tried to advance deep into the Syunik Region, but were stopped, the Armenian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has informed.

On May 13, Nikol Pashinyan had a telephone talk with Vladimir Putin, but he did not ask for any military assistance, since the Russian leader also believed that the Azerbaijani forces should return to their initial positions, the acting Premier said today during a parliament session.

"Azerbaijan has partially returned to its initial positions; but in some places its troops continue staying in the territory of Armenia; therefore, we find it necessary today to officially appeal to the Russian President for help in resolving the situation, including for military help," Nikol Pashinyan has stated.
