US calls on Yerevan and Baku to ease border tensions

Jake Sullivan, an assistant to the US President for national security, has called on Nikol Pashinyan and Ilham Aliev to hold talks on Armenian-Azerbaijani border demarcation, and treated the movement of troops on the border as irresponsible.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 12, Azerbaijani militaries advanced to the Black Lake area. Armenia treated it as an invasion into its Syunik Region. Azerbaijan claims that border guards had simply changed their location. On May 17, Nikol Pashinyan said that some of the 250 Azerbaijani militaries are still in Armenia.

Mr Sullivan held telephone talks with Nikol Pashinyan and Ilham Aliev, and called on the authorities of Armenia and Azerbaijan to hold talks on border demarcation, the TASS writes. He expressed concern about the countries' tensions.

The USA intends to achieve "reconciliation in the region" through consultations and as a co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group, the RIA "Novosti" has added.
