Court upholds verdict to native of Chechnya accused for involvement in terrorism

The Military Court of Appeal upheld the verdict to Ramzan Akhyadov, a native of Chechnya, extradited from Georgia, who was sentenced in Russia to seven years of imprisonment for involvement in the ranks of Syrian militants.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that 40-year-old Ramzan Akhyadov, accused of terrorism, was extradited to Russia by the Georgian authorities in September 2019. His family members expressed their concern about his health and future fate, and human rights defenders considered those fears to be justified. On March 19, the Southern District Military Court sentenced Ramzan Akhyadov to seven years of imprisonment.

According to the investigators’ version, in the period from November to December 2013, in the Syrian city of Atma, Ramzan Akhyadov, “being armed with firearms and ammunition, was a member of an illegal armed grouping.” In June 2015, in Turkey, Ramzan Akhyadov “tried to persuade his acquaintance to create on the territory of Chechnya an illegal armed formation (IAF) to be controlled by the “Islamic State” (IS, a terrorist organization, banned in Russia by the court, –note of the “Caucasian Knot”), the investigators suggested. Ramzan Akhyadov pleaded not guilty.
