Analysts doubt peacemakers' ability to react to all shelling of civilians in Nagorno-Karabakh

Armenavan, a suburb of Stepanakert, located a few kilometres from Shushi, is systematically shelled, local residents have complained. Karabakh human rights defenders demand peacemakers' reaction. Russian militaries are ensuring security on the contact line; besides, there are too few of them in the region; and they can't control the entire conflict zone, Russian analysts have explained.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on July 13, Stepanakert residents told about submachine gun shooting near Shushi (the Azerbaijani name is Shusha). On July 15, short submachine gun bursts were also fired in the direction of Stepanakert.

Shots from Shushi are heard every day, said Svetlana Babayan, a resident of the Stepanakert suburb.

Anna Sarumyan, a human rights defender, has noted that Armenavan residents demand peacemakers' reaction to the shelling.

Peacemakers are responsible for what happens on the parties contact line, but only in this narrow strip, Alexei Gunya, a geographer, has explained.

Peacemakers on the contact line are reacting to clashes and must stop them, said Alexander Perendjiev, a political analyst. However, in this case, there are too few Russian peacemakers on the contact line.

"As far as I remember, up to 1500 peacemakers are involved in this operation ... To have a due result, a contingent of 15,000 militaries is needed," Mr Perendjiev has explained.
