At Sochi festival, film about female circumcision impresses film critics

The film by the film director Lamara Sogomonyan "Get ready, let's go to holiday" about the practice of female circumcision stands out among other films and indicates the problem topicality. But the film does not reflect the way to solve it, film critics at the "Kinotavr" Film Festival assert.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that residents of Northern Caucasus had opposed the procedure for female circumcision. Thus, in 2020, a Chechen woman achieved the initiation of a criminal case on inflicting deliberate harm to the health of her nine-year-old daughter.

The film is set in a North-Caucasian dwelling settlement, where the gynaecologist Maya came under an international programme. She witnesses a female circumcision procedure performed by a doctor from a local hospital on a 9-year-old girl. Maya decides to intervene and prohibit such surgeries.

According to the scriptwriter, Yulia Pogrebnyak, cases of female circumcision are also known in Finland, where she lives.

Film critics and spectators have noted the topicality of the film. Yegor Belikov, a critic, has pointed to the unsolved problem of female circumcision. "It seemed to me that they are trying to make use of the topic relevance ... But if this film is followed by some more that will address the problem, then it's good," he has stated.
