“Nardaran case” reaches European Court

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has begun communication on complaints filed by nine persons sentenced in the “Nardaran case” who complained about ill-treatment and lack of effective remedies.

On January 25, 2017, Talekh Bagirzade, the leader of the movement “Muslim Unity”, and 17 of his supporters were sentenced to 10-20 years of imprisonment on the charge of organizing riots after a special operation conducted by law enforcers in November 2015 that resulted in the death of seven persons, including two policemen. The defendants complained about torture. They pleaded not guilty. Azerbaijani human rights defenders recognized the defendants in the “Nardaran case” as political prisoners.

The ECtHR began communication on the complaints filed by Djabbar Djabbarov, Abbas Guseinov, Ibragim Khudaverdiev, Etibar Ismailov, Elman Agaev, Ramil Seifullaev, Mubariz Ibragimov, Djabir Aliev, and Ruzi Ismailov. All of the complainants were arrested in connection with the so-called “Nardaran events” in 2015. They complained that they had been subjected to ill-treatment during their arrest and detention and that the authorities did not conduct an effective investigation into those facts, the ECtHR reported on its website on October 11.
