Azerbaijani checkpoint creates problems for Syunik residents

Armenian drivers can move along the 21-kilometre road by paying the customs duties established by Azerbaijan for this road section. Not a single dwelling settlement in Armenia was in blockade; however, the alternative roads to the three villages are currently unpaved.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on September 11, an Azerbaijani police post set up on the border section of the road connecting the Armenian cities of Goris and Kapan began its work.

Armenian drivers can move along the 21-kilometre road by paying the customs duties established by Azerbaijan for this road section, said Armen Grigoryan, the Secretary of the Armenian Security Council.

Not a single dwelling settlement in Armenia was in blockade; however, the alternative roads to the three villages are currently unpaved, Mr Grigoryan has noted and assured that they will be asphalted in the near future.

As a result of Azerbaijan's actions, Syunik residents have faced a serious humanitarian problem, Arman Tatoyan, the Armenian Ombudsperson, has stated.

The links between Goris, Vorotan, Shurnukh, Vardzravan and other settlements has become more complicated; problems have arisen with the availability of foodstuffs, essential goods, and medical care. "People have been brought to a humanitarian catastrophe," Mr Tatoyan has stated.

It was very difficult to organize the delivery of bread to the villages of Vorotan, Shurnukh and Vardzravan of the Goris community, he has explained. "The problem is further aggravated by the obstruction, including due to bad weather, of an alternative road near the village of Khot of the Tekh community," the Ombudsperson has noted, adding that the situation will worsen even more in winter.
