Park in honour of Djokhar Dudaev opened in Turkey

On December 10, the administration of the municipality of the city of Korfez in the Turkish Province of Kocaeli solemnly opened a park named after the first president of Ichkeria, Djokhar Dudaev. The official ceremony was attended by about three hundred members of the North-Caucasian Diaspora and Caucasian public organizations; delegates of the Chechen Diasporas in Europe were among the visitors, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent has reported.

Djokhar Dudaev, an Aviation Major General, was in the lead of the movement for the exit of Chechnya from the Soviet Union, the first president of Ichkeria (1991-1996), the supreme commander in chief during the First Chechen War.

The Chechen Republic of Ichkeria is an unrecognized separatist state entity created after the collapse of the USSR in a part of the territory of the former Chechen-Ingush Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic and liquidated by federal troops in 2000.

Shener Sogyut, the Mayor of Korfez City, said that it was a great honour for the Turkish people to open a park named after a man who is a symbol of the struggle for freedom.

The opening of the park was an initiative of the Mayoralty of Korfez, Ali Viskhadjiev, the head of the public organization of natives from Northern Caucasus, "Kavkazder", told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
