Kira Kovalenko's film dropped out of Oscar nomination list

The film "Unclenching the Fists", filmed in North Ossetia by a graduate of the Nalchik workshop, headed by Alexander Sokurov, has failed to get into the short list of candidates for the "Oscar" Award.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Russia had nominated the "Unclenching the Fists" by film director, Kira Kovalenko, for the "Oscar" Award. The film was included into the long list in the category "Best Foreign Film".

The film was shot in Mizur, a former miners' village in North Ossetia, located along the Transcaucasian highway. Mizur is fenced off from the highway by soundproof shields, which Kovalenko used as a metaphor in her film: life has stopped here, and it is very difficult for the main heroine to get out from behind these walls.

However, the short-list of nominees for the "Oscar" Award in the category "Best Foreign Film" containing 15 films and posted on the website of the American Film Academy has no Russian film.

Kira Kovalenko is a graduate of the workshop headed by Alexander Sokurov, a famous Russian film director. The workshop was opened in 2010 in Nalchik. Vladimir Bitokov and Kantemir Balagov, filmmakers from Kabardino-Balkaria, are also its well-known graduates. In 2019, Russia nominated Balagov's film "Dylda" for the "Oscar". It was shortlisted for the "Best Foreign Film", but was not included into the final list of candidates.
