Spouse of Polad Aslanov reports deterioration in his health state

Azerbaijani journalist Polad Aslanov has been continuing his hunger strike for 12 days already, His health state deteriorated, and his weight has fallen to 40 kilograms, said Gyulmira Aslanova, a spouse of the activist.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on January 11, Polad Aslanov’s wife Gyulmira Aslanova held a protest action in front of the building of the State Security Service of Azerbaijan and succeeded in seeking a meeting with the department’s officials. Gyulmira Aslanova promised to hold protest actions until her husband’s release. Today, the woman has come to a picket near the building of the General Prosecutor’s Office of Azerbaijan. She has demanded a meeting with the General Prosecutor, but the police pushed Gyulmira Aslanova away from the entrance to the building.

On January 6, Polad Aslanov, the editor-in-chief of the Azerbaijani Internet outlets Xeberman.com and Press-az.com, went on a hunger strike demanding a review of his case.

In her conversation with the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent, Gyulmira Aslanova explained the reasons for her protest action in front of the General Prosecutor’s Office. “Polad is accused of high treason, espionage. But there is not a single piece of evidence of my husband’s guilt in the case. Therefore, I demand a meeting with the General Prosecutor. Let him present at least one fact of my husband’s guilt,” Gyulmira Aslanova said.

According to the woman, she intends to continue holding protest actions. “I will strive to the end to restore my husband’s rights. I will continue the actions until my husband is released,” Gyulmira Aslanova said.

She also added that Polad Aslanov continued his hunger strike on January 17. “Polad has called me from the penal colony this morning. I could hardly hear him. He has got severe shortness of breath. Polad has lost 5-6 kilograms. Considering the weight of his clothes, he now weighs a little more than 40 kilograms,” Gyulmira Aslanova said.
