Makhachkala: journalists demand to release Abdulmumin Gadjiev

On January 31, two solo pickets in support of Abdulmumin Gadjiev, the arrested journalist of the "Chernovik" (Draft) outlet, were held in Makhachkala. Passers-by and motorists expressed their support for the picketers, Idris Yusupov, a journalist, has informed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Abdulmumin Gadjiev had been charged with financing terrorism. Investigators assert that Abdulmumin and his accomplices had raised 68 million roubles and USD 200,000 for terrorists under the pretext of building mosques and helping poor Muslims. Gadjiev insists on his innocence. His colleagues treat his prosecution as pressure on him because of his journalistic activities.

On January 31, the first picket, demanding freedom for Abdulmumin Gadjiev and an end to his criminal prosecution, was held in Makhachkala by Magdy Kamalov, the founder of the "Chernovik". The second picket, demanding freedom for political prisoners, was held by the journalist, Idris Yusupov.

The latter has noted that during both pickets passers-by and car drivers expressed their support. According to Yusupov, the pickets attracted much more citizens' attention than the previous similar actions.
