Saakashvili announces start of an indefinite hunger strike
Mikhail Saakashvili, the third president of Georgia, went on an indefinite hunger strike with the demand for proper medical treatment. The decision on hunger strike is made despite the doctor’s warning about the risk of death, Mikhail Saakashvili says in court.
The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that the trial in Mikhail Saakashvili’s case is taking place in Tbilisi. Meanwhile, Mikhail Saakashvili, who went on a long hunger strike after returning to the country, is not allowed to be visited by a personal doctor, which violates the rights of the arrested person, an advocate of the politician emphasizes.
According to the former Georgian president, his Dutch doctor categorically forbade him to go on a hunger strike again, as such a decision could lead to death. “I’m going for it. Let everyone see what love for the motherland means, let everyone see what it means to put own country higher than everything,” Mikhail Saakashvili said as quoted by the “InterPressNews”.
The former president of Georgia cited his only demand on the hunger strike: to ensure medical care in prison.
Nika Meliya, the leader of the “United National Movement” (UNM) Party, called Mikhail Saakashvili’s demand fair. According to Nika Meliya, supporters of the politician have been asking for the same for several months. Nika Meliya also calls Mikhail Saakashvili a captive, as he is severely restricted in his rights.
