Vaagn Khachaturyan elected President of Armenia

In the second round of voting, members of the Armenian parliament unanimously elected Vaagn Khachaturyan, the only candidate, as president.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on March 2, in the first round, 69 members of the Armenian parliament voted for Vaagn Khachaturyan, proposed by the ruling “Civil Contract” Party. The opposition boycotted the voting, and the second round of voting was scheduled in the parliament, as the president was not elected in the first round.

The National Assembly of Armenia has announced the results of the second round of the secret voting held today to elect the President in the second round. According to the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent, who watched the broadcast of the meeting on the parliament’s YouTube channel, 71 MPs voted for Vaagn Khachaturyan.

The entire composition of the parliamentary faction of the ruling “Civil Contract” Party voted for Vaagn Khachaturyan, the “News.am” reports.

According to the Constitution of Armenia, 3/5 votes or 65 votes are enough for a candidate to be elected in the second round. The president is elected for a term of seven years, and he takes office on the 10th day after the election.
