Russia ceases to be a party to European Convention on Human Rights

Russia has ceased to be a party to the Convention on Human Rights in connection with its withdrawal from the Council of Europe, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has announced.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on March 16, the ECtHR suspended consideration of complaints from Russia in connection with the Russia’s withdrawal from the Council of Europe (CoE). Meanwhile, the cases that were received from citizens of Russia at the ECtHR before March 16 should be considered, and the decisions made before that date should be executed, analysts note. On March 24, the ECtHR pronounced a decision that it would continue to consider complaints from Russian citizens about violations of the Convention on Human Rights until September 16.

On June 11, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a draft law on non-execution of the ECtHR judgments issued after March 15, 2022.

The ECtHR is currently considering 17,450 complaints against Russia.
