Verdict to KBR activist, Aslan Iritov, challenged at ECtHR

The trial of Aslan Iritov, an activist from the city of Nalchik, was not fair, and his sentence was based only on policemen's testimonies, the lawyers stated in their complaint lodged to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR).

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on July 19, 2022, the court considered the complaint against the Iritov's sentence and refused to satisfy it. The court session lasted for 10 minutes; Iritov was not even allowed to speak out, the activist told himself. Earlier, on December 29, 2021, the Supreme Court (SC) of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR) also refused to satisfy the appeal against the verdict.

On September 2, 2021, the Nalchik court found Iritov guilty of using violence against a policeman and sentenced him to two years of conditional imprisonment.

The "Memorial" Centre for Defence of Human Rights has sent a complaint to the ECtHR against the verdict to Aslan Iritov, the "Memorial" Centre has informed in its Telegram channel.

Let us remind you that on October 31, 2017, when members of the non-commercial organization (NCO) "Volny Aul" (Free Village) were going to hold a rally, law enforcers came to the yard of Aslan Iritov's house, the organization leader, with a warning about the inadmissibility of a non-sanctioned action. Experts have confirmed that Beslan Iritov (Aslan's brother) had his rib broken in a brawl with law enforcers; and Aslan Iritov's wife had a finger broken. Aslan Iritov himself and his daughter also received bruises.

According to investigators' initial version, Aslan Iritov, whose hand wrists are amputated, grabbed a law enforcer by the throat and choked him, "by squeezing his fingers." According to Iritov's advocate, this wording was in all the materials of the criminal case, but it was corrected after the obvious absurdity had attracted journalists' attention.
