Laureates of Akhmednabiev award draw attention to domestic violence in Southern Russia

The "Caucasian Knot" has summed up the outcomes of the annual contest named after the deceased journalist Akhmednabi Akhmednabiev. The first place was shared by Ekaterina Vinogradova from the "Cherta" (Line) outlet and Andrei Karev from the "Novaya Gazeta". The article by Karev is on the persecution of Apti Visaev, a native of Chechnya; while the one by Vinogradova, as well as the materials of the winners of the second and third places, tells about the violation of women's rights in Southern Russia.

A total of 41 publications made in 2021 were submitted for the contest. They told about the disputed territories and the hard fate of the settlers; corruption in agriculture; persecutions of political activists; the history of the Caucasus, and today's censorship. However, the main topic was on women's rights.

Thus, in her article "Dagestan is deeper than it seems" posted in the online "Cherta" outlet, Ekaterina Vinogradova tried to figure out what rights women have in Dagestan and which of them are observed in reality.

Ilona Gribkova devoted her material to a shelter located in Krasnodar. She visited the shelter and spoke with the founder, Yana Gundarova, and the women living there in escape from domestic violence.

The third place went to Sofia Volyanova, a special correspondent for the "Kholod" (Cold) outlet, who published an interview with Anna Manapova, a friend of Khalimat Taramova, who had been abducted from a shelter in Makhachkala. Volyanova found out what had happened in the crisis apartment.

The annual award in memory of the journalist, Akhmednabi Akhmednabiev, was established in 2014. It is awarded for materials that raise important issues of the socio-political, economic, social and cultural life of the Caucasus, or the influence of the Caucasus on other Russian regions and the world. Particular importance is given to human rights topics.

Akhmednabi Akhmednabiev was shot dead on July 9, 2013, in the village of Semender in Dagestan. His biography can be found in the "Personalities" Section of the "Caucasian Knot".
