Resident of Ingushetia suspected of abducting girl aiming to marry her

In the Malgobek District of Ingushetia, an underage girl was abducted by a 37-year-old man with the aim of marriage; a search is underway for him, sources have reported.

The custom of abducting brides is still quite widespread in the Caucasus, especially in Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia. The main reason for abductions is not in parents' prohibitions to marry, but in economic difficulties: relatives of the girl and the guy can agree on abduction in order to save money on wedding ceremonies. However, in quite a lot of such cases, abductions occur without girls' consents.

According to a law enforcement source, the above 16-year-old girl was abducted near her uncle's house; he filed a complaint with the police; a search is underway, the newspaper "Ingushetia" has written.

Let us remind you that the custom of abducting brides is in no way consistent with the Sharia Law, Caucasian experts had pointed out earlier.

"Neither in the Koran, nor in the Sunna it is allowed to steal girls. You can talk as much as you like about the harsh laws of Sharia ... But there is no forced marriage there," said Professor Alexei Malashenko.

In June 2022, a resident of Ingushetia was detained on suspicion of abducting a 19-year-old girl in order to marry her.
