ECtHR demands Russian authorities' answers about Musaeva's detention

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has communicated a complaint against the detention of Zarema Musaeva, demanding explanation from Russian authorities on how lawful Chechen law enforcers' actions were, human rights defenders have informed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in February 2022, a complaint was filed with the ECtHR pointing to violations in Musaeva's case of at least six articles of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), including threat to life and the prohibition of torture.

In Russia, Zarema Musaeva is accused of assaulting a law enforcer and committing a fraud.

"The ECtHR will consider how lawful the actions against Zarema were at night on January 21, 2022. Then, Chechen policemen broke into the house of Saidi Yangulbaev, a former Russian federal judge, abducted Zarema Musaeva, his wife and brought her by force to Grozny. Since then, the woman has been kept at the SIZO (pre-trial prison)," the human rights project "Team Against Torture" has stated in its Telegram channel.

The fact of communication means that the ECtHR has asked its questions to Russian authorities and representatives of the suffered party, human rights defenders have explained.
