Resident of Adygea left in custody despite complaint of torture

A court in Adygea has refused to release a local resident, who complained of torture and beatings at the SIZO (pre-trial prison), under house arrest. Information about torture has not yet been confirmed, the court has explained.

The native of Adygea has stated that he was under pressure by FSIN (Russian Federal Penitentiary Service) and other detainees, who had forced him to confess, the "Kavkaz.Realii"* project reports.

The man is accused of preparing to participate in an armed conflict in the territory of a foreign state with the aim contrary to the interests of the Russian Federation.

According to the ruling, the defendant has refused to plead guilty, but "there are facts about the physical, moral and psychological influence exerted on him by SIZO staff."

Besides, the investigative actions were postponed due to the fact that at the SIZO, the detainee "received bodily injuries from SIZO staff and was placed in a different cell with convicts who were determined in advance to continue beating him."

The defendant and his advocate asked to choose a measure of restraint in the form of house arrest.
