Residents of Ingushetia support idea of demanding health certificates from newlyweds

The idea to ban religious marriages without presenting by newlyweds of certificates about the absence of drug addiction and HIV infection is relevant for Ingushetia, local residents and activists have pointed out.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in July this year, Ingush authorities announced a ban on entering into religious marriages without the bridegroom presenting certificates of the absence of the above problems.

The neighbouring Chechnya has similar rules in place since 2011. Then, the republic's Muftiate obliged the newlyweds to present certificates of the absence of HIV infection. Since November 2018, those who marry in Chechnya must also be tested for the absence of sexually transmitted diseases and hepatitis B and C.

It is quite possible that such certificates will also be required from girls entering into religious marriages, Vakha Bekov, the head of the Ingush Ministry of National Affairs, has stated. He recalled the article of the Family Code, according to which a marriage can be declared invalid if one of the spouses had hidden the information about his HIV infection or other sexually transmitted diseases.

Isa Malsagov, the head of the "Antilirika" movement, is firmly convinced of the need to introduce such certificates. According to his story, among those who are called drug addicts, there are now girls, which was not observed before.

Vakha Kotiev, a teacher from the village of Inarki in the Malgobek District, agrees with this opinion. "I know the situation when a young family suddenly broke up. It turned out that the husband was a long-term drug addict. His family knew about it, but hid it, hoping that everything would work out somehow. Perhaps, the young wife would have come to terms with such a fate, but her relatives, having learned about the fact, returned the girl home. Her mother said that she needed healthy grandchildren," Mr Kotiev has explained, noting that he himself is not yet married, but when the time comes to start a family, he will give blood for analysis without hesitation.
