Court refuses to treat Magomedov's detention at picket as illegal

In court, the police have explained the detention of Magomed Magomedov, a deputy editor-in-chief of the "Chernovik" outlet by the concern for his safety because of a possible brawl. Idris Yusupov, a journalist, has fully confirmed Magomedov's testimony, but the court sided with the defendant and refused to recognize the police's actions as illegal.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on January 16, law enforcers detained Magomed Magomedov and Idris Yusupov, a journalist of the "Novoye Delo" outlet, who intended to hold solo pickets in defence of their colleague Abdulmumin Gadjiev; law enforcers explained that they had received a message about the intended mass riots. On April 17, Magomedov filed a lawsuit challenging the legality of the police's actions. Yusupov is also seeking to check law enforcers' actions.

The Sovietsky District Court of Makhachkala has dismissed Magomedov's claim, the "Memorial" Centre for Defence of Human Rights has informed. The official of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) insisted that the journalist was brought to the police station not as a suspect in an offense, but in order to isolate him for his own safety.

The "Caucasian Knot" has also reported that on July 11, 2022, the police detained Magomed Magomedov, who went out to a picket in Makhachkala in support of Gadjiev. Murad Muradov, a "Caucasian Knot" correspondent (included into the register of foreign agents), who was filming the picket, was also detained.
