Gamid Dataev, native of Dagestan, goes on hunger strike at SIZO

Gamid Dataev, who was recognized by human rights defenders as a political prisoner, has gone on a hunger strike at the Yekaterinburg SIZO (pre-trial prison). He insists that the case of the terrorist community has been fabricated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Gamid Dataev, a native of Dagestan, as well as the Muslims, Artyom Vatrya and Bekhruz Ganiev, were accused of creating and participating in a terrorist community in the Khanty-Mansiysk District, and a number of other crimes. Human rights defenders demanded to stop their criminal prosecution, treating the charges as unjustified.

In April 2020, Dataev, Vatrya and Ganiev were detained and charged with possession of weapons and explosives; and Dataev also with drug possession. The defendants claim that these objects and substances had been planted on them. Besides, all the three are accused of allegedly planning to blow up the mosque in Lyantor and kill its Imam.

Gamid Dataev has gone on a hunger strike at the Yekaterinburg SIZO "against the lawlessness and arbitrariness on the part of supervisory authorities" after the extension of his detention for three months, the human rights project "Support for Political Prisoners. Memorial" has reported.

Gamid claims that the criminal case against him was fabricated, and the law enforcers, who had tortured him and other defendants, are not being held accountable. According to the information of the above project, six more prisoners has joined Gamidov's hunger strike.

Gamid Dataev is 31 years old, before his arrest he maintained his family – his wife and two children.
