ECtHR treats Kadyrov's former guard as torture victim in colony

Ayub Tuntuev, a former employee of the security service of the President of Chechnya, was subjected to torture in the colony by law enforcers, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has stated and awarded Tuntuev's heiress compensation of EUR 12,500.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 15, 2008, the Supreme Court (SC) of Chechnya sentenced Ayub Tuntuev to 24 years in prison within the case of a terror act committed in 2005. On March 12, 2019, Tuntuev was found dead in the colony's medical unit. Before this, his defence filed a complaint with the ECtHR about pressure on Tuntuev and torture, while the prisoner himself never spoke about the desire to commit suicide, but reported threats against him.

The CCTV records and body examination failed to confirm the version of death after beating in the colony, the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF) stated then.

Having considered the complaint, the ECtHR has concluded that on May 17, 2016, Tuntuev was beaten on his kidneys, chest and head in the colony and threatened with sexual violence and poisoning by "two men in civilian clothes" in order to force him to confess. "Later that day, and again on May 20, 2016, the applicant was threatened by law enforcers who demanded that he waive his right to an advocate and remain silent about the ill-treatment," the ECtHR's publication says.

Let us remind you that on August 2, 2017, the court recognized Tuntuev as a participant in the attack on Pskov paratroopers in 2000; and his prison term was increased by 11 months.
